Installation

Desktop-2FA is a Python package for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Python 3.11 or newer is required.

Install with pip

python -m pip install desktop-2fa

Install with pipx

pipx installs the command-line application in an isolated environment:

pipx install desktop-2fa

Upgrade

The current release is 0.10.0 (October 30, 2026). Create an encrypted backup before upgrading and review compatibility notes, especially password-file whitespace handling.

d2fa backup
python -m pip install --upgrade desktop-2fa

For pipx installations, use pipx upgrade desktop-2fa.

Verify and get started

d2fa --version
d2fa --help
d2fa vault init

To install from source:

git clone https://github.com/wrogistefan/desktop-2fa
cd desktop-2fa
python -m pip install .
